BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 24. Turkmenistan attaches great importance to the further development of projects in the field of renewable energy sources, Trend reports via the CAREC Energy Outlook 2030, prepared by the experts of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
"Turkmenistan has tremendous potential for harnessing solar energy. With more than 300 sunny days annually and with average annual intensity of solar radiation ranging between 700–800 watts per square meter, the total technical potential of solar energy amounts to 655 GW," the ADB's report noted.
According to the bank's report, there are companies specializing in renewable energy systems on the market of Turkmenistan, and in some remote regions of the country solar panels are used as a replacement for diesel generators.
"Currently, the Government of Turkmenistan attaches great importance to the further development of projects in the field of renewable energy sources, and the high content of silicon in the sands of the Karakum Desert can allow the country to position itself as a center for the production of solar photovoltaic panels," the report added.
The deployment of solar photovoltaic systems will reduce Turkmenistan's dependence on natural gas power generation, and this will also have a major impact on decarbonization efforts.
