UN agencies’ areas of work announced in Uzbekistan in 2013

Heads of UN agencies, working in Uzbekistan, have announced the main directions of the work in the country, a statement placed on the website of United Nations Information Centre in Tashkent said today.

Acting head of the UNESCO office in Tashkent Krista Pikkat said that UNESCO will continue assisting the government in the development of science, culture and education, mainly, exerting efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

In particular, UNESCO will continue supporting the development of handicrafts and tourism, restoration of architectural monuments.

An important part of the work of the agency is to participate in a joint program of the five UN agencies to ensure the activity of people affected by the Aral Sea crisis.

Supporting the Uzbek authorities in the country's effort to become a member of the Global Partnership for Education will be another task for this year. UNESCO is working with the authorities to prepare and implement the plan of the education sector.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Jaco Cilliers highlighted three main areas in which the projects are planned to be implemented in 2013.

The first area is energy efficiency and "green" economy. UNDP will work on existing projects with the Uzbek government to promote saving energy and to ensure environmental sustainability.

The second area is to promote the concept of rendering services for business and state governance, including the Uzbek regions. In this area, UNDP is implementing a project. 'Single Window Centers' operate in Uzbek various regions within this project.

The third area is to continue the joint project of UNDP and the Uzbek Ministry of Labour and Social Protection "Social partnership in employment". The project helps to employ people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

According to the UNAIDS Country Coordinator of the Joint UN Programme for HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS) Denis Haveaux, four main goals have been determined in UNAIDS's plan in Uzbekistan.

UNAIDS will support the improvement of the data collection mechanism, in particular, will work to reveal the number of people in each high-risk group and a number of people living with HIV in Uzbekistan.

The civil society organizations and NGOs are being supported in the work with organizations at the national level within the program. The joint work with the government is underway to implement the national strategic program for combating HIV / AIDS.
