Uzbekistan to develop sericulture and karakul sheep breeding sectors

By the decree of the President of Uzbekistan, a committee for the development of sericulture and karakul breeding (breed of domestic sheep) and the organization of in-depth processing of raw materials with the creation of sericulture and karakul breeding clusters will be formed, Trend reports with reference to UzA national information agency in Uzbekistan.

It was decided to create karakul breeding clusters, as well as enterprises for slaughtering cattle, processing wool and skins, producing meat and dairy products, semi-finished products and finished products by July 1, 2021.

Clusters are obliged to efficiently use pastures, prevent their degradation, and breed pedigree small ruminants using scientific and innovative approaches.

Starting from January 1, 2021, clusters are subject to the procedure for granting subsidies for the reconstruction and construction of new shaft and vertical wells in the regions of Uzbekistan, as well as a pumping station for pumping water in the amount of up to 120 million soums ($11,686).

The clusters are leased out pastures intended for breeding Karakul sheep, including on the lands of the forest fund not covered with forests.

When exporting silk waste (including silk wool) and raw silk across the customs border of Uzbekistan from January 1, 2021, a fee will be charged for each kilogram of silk waste (including silk wool) and raw silk to $0.05.

Starting from the 2021/2022 academic year, the committee should provide for the opening in the branches of the Tashkent State Agrarian University and the Samarkand Institute of Veterinary Medicine of special areas for training in the field of karakul breeding.

The Council of Ministers of Uzbekistan's Karakalpakstan Republic and authorities of regions by November 1, 2020, to assist the Commission in carrying out a complete inventory of the available pastures intended for breeding Karakul sheep, as well as ensure the timely transfer of pastures to the Committee for permanent possession and allocate land plots to clusters for the formation of a fodder base.
