The Board of Directors of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) approved financing of two large-scale and economically significant projects in Uzbekistan for a total of $509.2 million, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan.

The first project, worth $200 million, provides for the modernization of a number of infrastructure and social facilities in the Karakalpakstan Republic, as well as Khorezm, Bukhara, and Navoi regions.

The project envisages the construction and reconstruction of 1,161 kilometers of water supply systems, 626 kilometers of access and intramassive roads, 1,154 kilometers of low-voltage power lines, 693 kilometers of irrigation and drainage networks, 155 educational, medical, and more than 100 other facilities.

The second project, worth $80 million, envisages the implementation of the second phase of the program to comprehensively improve the system of providing medical services to patients with cancer by equipping domestic clinics with modern medical equipment.

According to the ministry, the implementation of the project will make it possible to establish the diagnosis of oncological diseases in the early stages, and generally improve the quality of patient treatment. More than 1.8 million women will be able to undergo diagnostic screening, and 150,000 cancer patients will receive quality medical care.

Earlier, the IDB allocated funds in the amount of $37 million within the first phase of this program.

An agreement was also reached with the IDB to hold the 46th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in 2021, which will be attended by delegations from 57 member countries of the Bank, heads of international organizations, foreign companies, financial structures, and public associations.

“Holding an event of this scale in Uzbekistan will emphasize the high level of cooperation with the IDB, and will also draw the attention of the wide international community to positive trends and transformations in all spheres of the country's socio-economic life,” the ministry said.
