BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 25

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

Food products imported into the territory of Uzbekistan will be labeled starting from January 1, 2025, the Uzbek Sanitary and Epidemiological Welfare and Public Health Service told Trend on Friday.

The service noted that labeling of food products is carried out in accordance with the general technical regulations on the safety of food products in terms of their labeling, approved by the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan.

"The issue of labeling food products with signs indicating safety or harm to human health in terms of the amount of salt, sugar, and fat contained in the composition is planned to be introduced voluntarily from July 1, 2021," the message said.

In addition, starting from January 1, 2025, food products imported into the territory of Uzbekistan, as well as those produced in the country, will be labeled according to the specified ingredients without fail.

The service also noted that a healthy lifestyle support center for physical activity of the population has been created under the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, which will deal with the introduction of labeling.

“Replacing existing labeling requirements takes some time. Criteria for assessing quantitative indicators of salt, sugar, and fat content will be developed, indicating their safety for human health. This information will be posted on the website of the Center for Supporting a Healthy Lifestyle and Physical Activity of the Population of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan,” the service said.

According to the information, these measures will oblige food manufacturers to provide clear information on the amount of salt, sugar, and fat in their products and prepare consumers for labeling them with a color image, which will allow them to navigate the number of specified ingredients.
