FAO's 'smart farming for future generation' project launched in Uzbekistan

FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) project ‘Smart Farming for the Future Generation’, implementing in Uzbekistan and Vietnam with a total budget of $3.4 million with financial support from South Korea has been launched, Trend reports citing FAO.

An introductory seminar was held at the AKIS National Center for Knowledge and Innovation in Agriculture in Uzbekistan, which marked the official launch of FAO's 4-year project ‘Smart Farming for the Future Generation’.

The event was attended by FAO experts, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan and the Agency for the Development of Horticulture and Greenhouse Economy under the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan. Representatives of the sphere from Fergana, Namangan and Andijan regions also joined the event in an online format.

It was noted at the seminar that advanced technologies are widely used in agriculture, especially in greenhouses, contributing to increased productivity, improved climate control, soil and water management, and pest control.

FAO Deputy Representative in Uzbekistan Sherzod Umarov said that the implementation of this project is aimed at improving the living standards of the rural population by increasing incomes, providing employment and improving the diet.

“At the same time, consumers will have access to safe and affordable food all year round. All this will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, namely the eradication of poverty, ensuring good health and well-being for all,” he said.

It was also noted that the project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan, regional organizations and research institutes. The project will create three demonstration sites in Uzbekistan to build capacity, develop agribusiness opportunities and receive technical support.
