Uzbekistan to develop roadmap within UN resolution on Aral Sea region

Uzbekistan to develop a roadmap to accomplish tasks within the framework of a special resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on declaring the Aral Sea region a zone of environmental innovations and technologies, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan (MIFT).

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of MIFT Sardor Umurzakov held a videoconference meeting dedicated to the unanimous adoption by the UN General Assembly of a special resolution on declaring the Aral Sea region a zone of environmental innovations and technologies.

According to the MIFT, this initiative was first proposed by the president of Uzbekistan at a meeting of the heads of the founding states of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in August 2018, held in Turkmenistan.

It was noted at videoconference that the implementation of this initiative with the participation of all countries in the region will create conditions for attracting foreign investment in the development and implementation of environmentally friendly technologies, the integrated implementation of the principles of a green economy, environmentally friendly, energy and water saving technologies, prevention of desertification and environmental migration, as well as the development of ecotourism and improving the well-being of the local population.

Also, it was noted that at the international high-level conference "Aral Sea Region - a zone of environmental innovations and technologies" held under the auspices of the UN on October 24-25, 2019 in Nukus, which was attended by 150 representatives from 28 states, the initiative put forward by the president of Uzbekistan was unanimously supported.

Based on the tasks set out in the resolution, the heads of ministries and departments were instructed to develop a roadmap as soon as possible, including promising innovative projects and activities that correlate with the goals and objectives of the adopted resolution.

In addition, it was instructed to organize the activities of seven special working groups in each direction, consisting of heads and experts of ministries, departments and local authorities. The general task of these groups will be to analyze the projects being developed and ensure their effective implementation, as well as develop proposals and activities for inclusion in the roadmap.
