Uzbekistan in no hurry to end Chevy Spark production despite latest GM reports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.8

By Natavan Rzayeva - Trend:

Uzbekistan will continue to produce Chevrolet Spark car model despite that the production in the US has seemingly run its course, Trend reports via the press service of Uzbek Uzavtosanoat company.

Several days ago news broke out that General Motors Co. is discontinuing the Chevrolet Spark, its entry-level model and one of the few cars it has left in the lineup.

Production of the South Korean-built hatchback will end after August 2022, Chevrolet has confirmed.

"Customers seeking comfort, function and style at an approachable price still have strong options within Chevrolet’s family of compact SUVs," spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement.

GM has been phasing out car production for years now. The Detroit automaker previously halted production of the Chevy Cruze, Sonic and Impala, leaving three car nameplates on its roster: the Camaro, Corvette and Malibu.

The above news caused online discussions in Uzbekistan, backed by rumors that the model's production in the country would also be stopped. However, Uzbek Uzavtosanoat has confirmed the production will continue in Uzbekistan.

In 2021, 24,400 units of Chevrolet Spark were sold in the US, while in 2020, during the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sales amounted to 33,500 units.

Last year 9,900 Chevrolet Spark cars were produced in Uzbekistan.
