Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan plan to accelerate construction of Kambar-Ata-1 HPP

BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 27. Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan discussed measures on accelerating the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 Hydro power plant (HPP), Trend reports via Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investment, Industry, and Trade.

The matter was discussed between Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade Laziz Kudratov, and the Director of Kyrgyzstan’s National Investments Agency Umbriel Temiraliev.

During the meeting, the sides also discussed the prospects of cooperation in the fields such as textile production, mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical, leather and footwear products, building materials, and electrical engineering, as well as cooperation in the energy, agriculture, transport, and tourism sectors.

Throughout negotiations, the parties emphasized that the Uzbek-Kyrgyz Development Fund is one of the most important elements of investment and industrial cooperation between the countries.

Following the talks, Kudratov and Temiraliev agreed to prepare several documents to speed up the construction of Kambar-Ata-1 HPP, as well as to boost cooperation in the all mentioned areas.

Kambar-Ata-1 HPP will be built on the Naryn River in the Jalal-Abad region of Kyrgyzstan. According to preliminary estimates, the height of the dam will be 256 meters, and the volume of accumulated water - 5.5 billion cubic meters. The capacity of the HPP will be 1,860 megawatts, generating 5 billion kWh of electricity per year.

Construction of the plant was planned in the late 1980s. But since then the project has remained frozen. However, due to the electricity shortage, Kyrgyzstan’s authorities 2012 decided to resume the construction process. In 2017, Uzbekistan decided to become a shareholder in the construction project of the plant.

Furthermore, earlier in January 2023, the Energy Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan signed a roadmap for the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 HPP and agreed to create a joint venture
