Iran's Foreign Ministry has summoned Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Tehran to protest against the mistreatment of Iranians at Turkmen border checkpoints, Press TV reported.
Ahmed Qurbanov was called to the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday to hear Iran's serious concerns over the treatment of Iranian nationals and to pass to Ashgabat Tehran's official protest, IRNA reported.
The ministry called in the envoy after it received various complaints from disgruntled Iranian nationals over the misconduct of Turkmen customs officials and border guards.
Turkmen border guards at customs or checkpoints were reported to have mistreated, insulted or beaten Iranian nationals including drivers, and had seized more than 66 trucks.
There were also reports of dissatisfaction with legal procedures, such as long delays in court rulings for the recovery of debts owned to Iranian businesspersons.
The Turkmen ambassador said he would put across the protest to his government.
Turkmenistan shares a long border with Iran's north east region and, since gaining independence from the USSR, it has had a growing business with Iran.
