Iranian politician and university professor, Mohammad Ali Najafi has been tapped for Mehdi Karroubi's management and strategic planning advisor, PressTV reported.

The 58-year-old mathematician has previously served as the country's culture and higher education minister under several administrations including former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi in the early eighties.

He was also the minister of education during Hashemi Rafsanjani's presidency.

He is currently a member of Tehran's City Council and an instructor at the capital's prestigious Sharif University of Technology.

Other senior figures in Karroubi's campaign camp include ex-culture minister Ataollah Mohajerani and Tehran's former mayor Gholam-Hossein Karbaschi.

Karbaschi, former Tehran mayor, had earlier stated that his support for Karroubi is due to his firm personality, steadfastness in bringing about his goals as well as his insistence to resolve the problems of the people.

Mehdi Karroubi served as Iranian parliament speaker from 1989 to 1992 and from 2000 to 2004. He ran for president in 2005, which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad triumph with 61.7 percent of the votes.
