In Iran, Karroubi's paper warned over election coverage

Defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi's newspaper, Etemad-e Melli, has received a warning over the coverage of the 10th presidential election, Press TV reported.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, on Monday, issued a warning to the managing editor of the daily for publishing what it called 'untrue' articles.

"Following the circulation of untrue reports and appearance of numerous articles constantly questioning the legal process of [Iran's] tenth presidential election in the Etemad-e Melli daily, the managing editor of the daily has received a written warning," the ministry's public relations office said in a statement, Mehr News reported.

Etemad-e Melli hit the newsstands in 2005, a few months after the 9th presidential election, in which Karroubi came third in the vote count.

The ministry called on the daily to take into consideration the 'interests' of the country and the Islamic establishment when publishing articles.

Prior to the election, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had criticized 'a majority' of Iranian media outlets, saying most of the daily papers had taken 'a stance against' him.

Following Ahmadinejad's landslide victory in the June 12 election, defeated candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Karroubi disputed the veracity of the vote, rejecting the result as 'fraudulent'.

Ahmadinejad was officially endorsed as president by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a Monday ceremony attended by high-ranking officials.
