Iranian court orders thief's hand amputated

A court in western Iran ordered the amputation of a thief's hand, local media reported Saturday.

A man convicted of robbery had his hand cut off in the city of Malayer, the daily Kayhan said without giving further details.

Hand amputation is a traditional Islamic punishment for thieves with several convictions, but it had not been implemented in Iran in recent years, DPA reported.

Police said last year that the practice could be reinstituted as a way to deter rising crime.

Implementing Islamic law in Iran - such as hand amputations, stoning for adultery and executing minors - has caused international criticism.
