Iranian Department Director: Lake Urmia is on verge of disappearance

Iran's largest lake, Urmia, which is located between the provinces of East and West Azerbaijan, has dried up almost a third, director of the Iranian State Department for Lakes Protection Ali Nazardust said.

Building dams, decrease in rainfall and other negative factors led to drying up of the Lake Urmia, Nazardust said in an interview to the website Alef.ir, which is close to Iran's ruling conservative camp.

At present, the salinity of the lake's water is 330 ‰, Nazardust said. Earlier, this figure was 160-170 ‰. The lake's area was reduced by one third. Earlier the reservoir covered 5,000 square meters.
