Iran's Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Ali Abdullahi says Tehran has taken all necessary steps to show support for Iraq's sovereignty, Press TV reported.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran wants stability, security and independence for Iraq," Abdullahi said at his Monday meeting with UN Special Representative for Iraq Ad Melkert.
He added that Iran proposed the Meeting of Iraq Neighboring Countries in order to promote and protect Iraqi social, economic and national security, Fars News Agency reported.
Abdullahi went on to say that Tehran had also formed a joint Iran-Iraq committee for maintaining security in the country.
The committee has taken effective steps to resolve border issues between the two countries, including choosing eight border points for the authorized passage of pilgrims and tourists, he added.
Abdullahi said 5,000 Iranian pilgrims enter Iraq every day, adding that this number could increase by threefold if Iraqi authorities take necessary security measures.
The Iranian deputy minister pointed to the presence of 35,000 Iraqi asylum seekers in Iran and expressed hope that the grounds would be prepared for their return to their country.
