NATO Envoy: Reports on joint Iranian-Russian missile shield is ‘fiction’
Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 1 /Trend T.Konyayeva/
Russian envoy to NATO Dmitry Rogozin named information about the Iran-Russia negotiations on establishment of a joint missile defense system as "a media hoax," RIA Novosti reported.
"I have read a report published in one of the Iranian newspapers. I would like to say that this report contradicts the reality just for the simple reason that we can hold talks on such a sensitive issue affecting the Russian strategic security and status of strategic nuclear forces only with our military allies," Rogozin said in an interview with Russia-24 Channel.
"Our military ally is the CSTO. Iran, with all our respect for this country, is our traditional neighbor and partner on many issues, but it is not our military ally."
Earlier, this week, Mehr news agency quoted unofficial sources as saying that Iran, Russia, and China are currently holding talks on a proposal to establish a joint missile defense shield as a counterweight to a NATO defense shield.
