Tens of thousands of minnows have died of unknown causes in the Iranian Ardabil Province.

The fish was killed in the town of Germi's Gilarlu Lake started two weeks ago, but no government agency has intervened or started cleaning operations, Mehr news agency reports.

A hundred thousand minnows were released in Gilarlu Lake this year. All seem to have died.

Releasing fish into Gilralu Lake was a mistake to begin with, said a technical veterinary official for the Ardabil Province. One reason is the sharp difference between the lake's temperatures and that of the pools where the fish are farmed.

If the health department or other government agencies don't clean up the dead fish soon they will spread unknown diseases and create a health hazard.

Tests are being done on water samples from Gilarlu Lake. They should reveal what caused the fish kill by the end of next week.
