Tax rates which are imposed on legal entities in Iran are at a medium level by international standards, Iranian Tax Affairs Director Ali Asgari said on Wednesday.
He told the IRNA News Agency that tax rates in some developed countries are around 35 per cent and in others 18 to 20 per cent.
"Tax rates in developed countries are much higher than those in Iran. So, tax rates in Iran are of a medium level by international standards." Asgari noted.
Although Iran's taxation system has been the focus of attention since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, lack of an efficient tax system has worsened the existing imbalance in the country's income distribution, according to Press TV.
The country's taxation system is currently indirect and therefore lacks adequate transparency.
According to official figures, 41 per cent of Iran's gross domestic product has been exempted from paying tax which is very high compared to other countries.
The corresponding figures for developed and developing countries respectively stand at below 14 per cent and around 20-30 per cent.
