The head of Tehran's Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Mines (TCCIM), warned that Iran is engaged in an economic war.

Understanding these conditions is important and whatever plans and policies are made, this has to be kept in mind said Yahya Ale-Eshaq, the TCCIM's chairman, Mehr news agency reports.

Mr. Ale-Eshaq said Iranians have to accept that "the enemy has attacked the country". Under these conditions not only does the country have to create opportunities when obstacles are thrown in its way, it has to avoid any turmoil and conflict.

Iran's economy is under increasing pressure from the international sanctions levied against its oil industry and Central Bank because of the country's nuclear development programme. The sanctions make it nearly impossible for Iran to conduct financial transactions and move money around the globe. In addition, July 1 marked the beginning of the European Union's ban on buying Iran's oil. European companies which insure almost all of the world's oil tankers have stopped insuring vessels carrying Iranian oil.

The West's measures are designed to make Iran become more transparent about its nuclear programme which it says is peaceful.
