MP: Sanctions made Iran more independent economically

West's sanctions made Islamic Republic of Iran more independent and self-reliant, Iranian MP Alireza Khosravi said in a meeting with local officials here on Thursday, IRNA reported.

"Embargoes on Iran are futile, Iran has always changed challenges to opportunity and made big progress as a result of sanctions and limitations", Khosravi said on Thursday.

Senior MP also condemned the recent insult to the holy Prophet of Islam by films and cartoons made in the West.

The United States imposed sanctions on Iran after 1979 Islamic revolution, while more recent rounds of sanctions by the US and EU were imposed on Tehran on the pretext of its peaceful nuclear program.

The European Union has imposed restrictions on cooperation with Iran in foreign trade, financial services, energy sectors and technologies, and banned the provision of insurance and reinsurance by insurers in member-states to Iran and Iranian-owned companies.
