The reformists have sent a joint letter to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei regarding the participation of Mohammad Khatami at the upcoming presidential elections in Iran, member of Iranian Islamic Coalition party (Islamic Motalefeh party), Asadullah Badamchyan said, ILNA reported.

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami is a reformist politician. He served as the fifth President of Iran from 2 August 1997 to 3 August 2005.

Khatami supported Mir Hussein Mousavi in the presidential election in 2009. Earlier, he criticized the economic, domestic and foreign policy of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Khatami has said repeatedly that crisis began after the 2009 election continues to this day.

Asadullah Badamchyan said that in their letter, the reformists asked the Supreme Leader to supervise the allowance of Khatami to participate in the upcoming elections.

Next presidential elections in Iran are slated to be held on June 14, 2013.

The voters will select the successor of current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third straight time due to country's constitutional laws.

"The next presidential elections, the reformists are said to have several approaches. Some say they will not participate in elections. Others have suggested to boycott the elections. And some are in the procss of making Mr. Mohammad Khatami involved in the elections," Asadullah Badamchyan said.

Secretary-general of Iranian Islamic Coalition party (Islamic Motalefeh party), conservative politician Hassan Ghafourifard told Trend in an interview in Nov. that if reformists to abandon the upcoming presidential elections in Iran, it will eventually lead to their own destruction.

Previously some organizations including the Coordinating Council of the Reformers said they will not submit a list of candidates and not nominate anyone for the next parliamentary elections, despite that Iranian media reported of 15-20 reformists currently residing in the parliament.

Presently, reformist political groups in Iran said that in January of 2013, a special assembly would be established for the parties to bring their positions closer before the 2013 elections.

Spokesman for Coordination Front's reform council, Najafqulu Habibi said that this assembly would hold meetings on 16-17 January in Tehran.

In November, Iran's political reformist groups met country's former president Mohammad Khatami, and expressed their will to have Khatami as a candidate at the upcoming elections.

Khatami himself said that he still waits for the positive changes in the country, and will reveal his decision when the time is right.
