The head of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT), Seyyed Ali Malek Hosseini has criticized increasing kidney selling phenomenon in Iran, ISNA news agency reported.
He said that selling kidney is illegal in the world, while in Iran it is legal, and country's reputation has been tainted in the world due to the phenomenon.
He went on to note that, Iran's capital city Tehran ranks first in kidney selling, while Isfahan comes in second.
During last solar year (ended on March 21) some 400 liver transplantations have been carried out in Iran, Hosseini said, adding that from beginning of the current solar year the figure stood at 200.
Despite the increased figures, Hosseini noted that Iran is one of the leading countries in the region, in terms of liver transplantations.
