In the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year which started March 21, 12 ships loaded and unloaded their goods at the newly-built Astara dock in the northern province of Gilan.

"Iran exported 10,000 tons of non-oil goods worth $972,000 by 11 ships via Astara port in the same period," the ISNA News Agency quoted Astara Customs Organisation Director Jahangir Bakhshi as saying.

"Russia and Azerbaijan were the main destinations for the exported goods," he said.

"A Russian ship carrying 1050 tons of goods worth 20 billion rials ($6.3 million based on the price of the USD on the free market) also unloaded its goods in Astara port in the five-month period," he said.

The head of Astara's Agricultural Jihad Organisation said in July that over 46.338 million dollars' worth of agricultural products were exported from Iran's northern port city of Astara in the first three months of the current year which started on March 21.

The exported consignments weighed 65,450 tons, the IRNA News Agency quoted Iraj Shiarkar as saying.

Iran exported 24 items including kiwi, potato, raisin, apple and vegetables from Astara in the aforementioned period, he explained.

Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Central Asian countries were the main destinations for the exported products, Shiarkar added.

The figures show a 10 and 30 per cent rise in terms of weight and value compared to the same period in the previous year, he said.

Iran exported 4.2 billion dollars' worth of agricultural products in the previous calendar year which ended on March 20.
