Three people were hanged in the Iranian Rasht city prison of the Gilan province, Fars news agency reported.

According to the report, the Iranian court has sentenced them to death penalty by hanging due to drug carrying and murder charges.

It should be recalled that Prosecutor General of Iran had approved the regional court's sentence.

One of the sentenced men has been sentenced due to carrying 15.329 kilograms of crack, with selling 5 kilograms of that amount.

Another man has also been sentenced due to carrying and selling 15.209 kilograms of crack.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and the trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of five kilograms are among crimes punishable by death penalty in Iran.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world. During the last 6 months, more than 150 people were hanged in Iran in total.

Iran is on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. The Islamic Republic shares about 900 kilometers of a common border with Afghanistan, through which about 74 percent of opium is smuggled.

According to the official estimates, fight against drugs annually cost Iran about $1 billion. The statistics also say that there are about 2 million drug users in Iran.
