(IRIBNews) - Muslim academics and community leaders from 25 European countries are gathering in London this weekend for a three-day conference to discuss ways of countering the negative images portrayed of Islam in the wake of the US-led war against terrorism.

The meeting, which starts on Friday, is being organized and hosted by the Kuwaiti Government's Ministry of Islamic Affairs (AWQAF), which is seeking to act as an intermediary to improve understanding and relations between the Islamic world and western nations, reports Trend.

Mutlag al-Garawi, Undersecretary of AWQAF, said the conference is an "important staging post enroute to finding a way to bridge the gap between Muslims and non-Muslims in Europe and beyond."

Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Britain Sir Iqbal Sacranie said he hoped agreement could be reached on a number of key issues facing the Muslim community in Europe that will help communicate the true nature of Islam.
