German Chancellor: Turkey a Bridge Between Europe and Islam

(Zaman) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Turkey functions as a bridge between Europe and Islam.

In an interview with Zaman in which she referred to Turkeys important position, Merkel said Turkey will adopt an important role to establish both stability in the Middle East and good relations with Iran, reports Trend.

Merkel, speaking about her upcoming visit, said she will be pleased to visit Turkey for the first time as a Chancellor in October.

In response to the question, Do you believe cooperation is possible between Turkey and Germany regarding peace in the Middle East, she responded by saying that she had conducted a number of telephone conversations with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the reestablishment of peace in Lebanon.

Turkey has always played an important role in the Middle East and functioned as a bridge between Europe and the Muslim world, said Merkel, emphasizing Turkeys key role in potentially solving the Middle East problem.

Merkel described Turkeys closeness to the European community and its membership to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and she promised support for the adaptation process of Turkish immigrants living in Germany.
