(Euronews.net) - Mexico's electoral court will deliver its final ruling today following an inquiry into the result of the recent presidential election. Commentators expect Felipe Calderon of the governing Conservative Party to be designated President-elect. The left-wing candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador alleged widespread vote rigging had taken place. But the seven electoral court judges dismissed his fraud claims last week, reports Trend.
Protests by Obrador's supporters have crippled Mexico City over the last month. Instead of admitting defeat, Obrador has pledged to set up a parallel government which he claims will overhaul the country. The election campaign and the fraud claims have split Mexico and posed a serious challenge to its fledgling democracy, just finding its feet after seven decades of one-party rule.
