( IRNA ) - The European Union has welcomed the decision by the Islamic Republic of Iran to take part in the conference on Iraq in Egypt later this week.

"The European Union very much welcomes the fact that Iran will be represented at a high level in the Sharm el-Sheik Conference. We have high hopes that this conference will have an important impact in the process of stabilization of Iraq," Cristina Gallach, spokesperson for EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told IRNA in Brussels Tuesday.

"The presence of Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki shows how serious the Iranian leaders take the stabilization of Iraq," she noted.

Leaders from Iraq's neighbours, the five permanent UN Security Council members and the G-8 will meet in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Thursday and Friday to discuss ways to stabilize Iraq.

Iran's Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani in a meeting with Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi on Monday said that no miracle is expected from the international Sharm el-Sheikh conference.

The SNSC secretary added that if the upcoming event aims to support the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maleki and contribute to the country's stability and security, Iran will stand up for it.
