Iran's East Azerbaijan province and Russia's Tatarstan Republic are to boost mutual economic ties.

Tatarstan's Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov expressed hope on expanding cooperation with East Azerbaijan in various fields including agriculture, industry, technology and tourism during a meeting with a delegation from East Azerbaijan led by Hussein Behboudi, deputy governor of the province, Iranian official IRNA news agency reported Sept. 9.

Behboudi expressed interest in innovative projects implemented in Tatarstan and expressed a desire for developing trade, economic and investment cooperation with the province.

The two sides also discussed the Tatar side's participation in mining projects in East Azerbaijan.

The parties agreed to setup committees to prepare Memorandum of Understandings on related issues.

According to the website of Tatarstan Government, bilateral trade turnover between Tatarstan and Iran amounted for $8.7 million in 2013, and there is potential for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.

The Tatarstan capital city, Kazan is scheduled to host Tabriz (capital city of East Azerbaijan) cultural week in October 2014, according to IRNA.
