Over 6.7 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 21.

Iranian Roads Maintenance Organization official Mohammad Javad Atrchian said some 96 percent of the goods were transited by roads, showing 6 percent rise compared to the same period of time last year, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on October 5.

The transited consignments mostly consisted of fuel, home appliances, cotton, construction materials and vehicles.

Atrchian said on August 5 that 24 border terminals will be expanded and modernized.

Transit operations and procedures will be streamlined in the current year, he added.

To this end, 1 trillion rials (about $32 million) will be expended, he noted.

Over 12 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran in the past Iranian calendar year, a 4 percent rise year on year.
