Iran targets 43 million tons of annual cargo transportation

Iran's railways have targeted transportation of 43.5 million metric tons of cargo transportation (equal to 28.9 billion kilometer-ton) during the current fiscal year (to be ended March 21, 2016), Ebrahim Mohammadi, vice president of the Iranian Railways said.

Kilometer-ton (kmt) unit is the transportation of one ton of goods over one kilometer.

The cargo will include 27 million metric tons of freight transported inside the country, 10.5 million metric tons of goods for export, 4.1 million metric tons of imported goods as well as 2 million metric tons of transited goods, Mohammadi said, Iran 's official IRNA news agency reported June 10.

Meanwhile the amount of fright transported via railways stood at 24.4 billion kmt in last fiscal year (ended on March 20), nine percent more compared to the preceding year.

Iran currently has over 8000 kilometers of standard railways.
Iran's railway networks recently linked to Central Asia railways. The Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway makes shorter the distance between the Gulf, Central Asia and Europe.

The railway is part of the North-South international transport corridor. A project, called the North-South, is being implemented on the basis of an agreement signed in 2007 by Turkmenistan, Iran and Kazakhstan. The railway length is 925 kilometers in total, with 85 kilometers on Iran 's territory, 700 on Turkmenistan 's territory and the remaining 140 on Kazakhstan 's territory.
