Iran decreased consumption of diesel and fuel oil (mazut) in power generation by 31 percent during 343 days of the current fiscal year (from March 21, 2015 to Feb. 26, 2016), Iranian Energy Ministry's official website reported on March 9.

Iran's total liquid fuel consumption reached 12.285 billion liters during the said period, of which 56 percent is shared by diesel.

During the mentioned period, the thermal power plants in Iran were supplied with 52.516 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which indicates a 16-percent increase year-to-year.

Also during the same period, Iran produced about 266 billion kWh of electricity and consumed 196.67 billion kWh, while the net export of electricity reached 5.556 billion kWh.

The large gap between production and consumption indicates a huge volume of energy waste in Iran.
