By Dalga Khatinoglu – Trend:

Natural gas shared 44.6 percent of Iran’s total primary energy production and 52.75 percent of consumption during the fiscal year to March 2015.

Iran consumed more than 1,320 million barrels of oil equivalent of primary energy during the mentioned year, which indicates a 7.5-percent growth year-to-year, mostly due to increase in gas consumption, Oil Ministry’s new 556-page report said.

Oil products share 36.53 percent of Iran’s final energy usage, electricity 9.86 percent, other sources, including renewables and coal, share about 0.86 percent.

Iran’s energy consumption per capita is about 1.6 times more than the global averages, while in the natural gas and oil products consumption the figure is about 5.6 times and 1.6 times more than the global averages.

Iran consumed 172.5 billion cubic meters per year (bcm/y) of natural gas in the fiscal year to March 20, 2015.

The country produced 249 million barrels of gas condensate, of which 44.4 percent was consumed in petrochemical units, 13.3 percent in refineries, and the remainder was exported during the mentioned year.

Iran refined 1.801 mb/d of crude oil and gas condensate, and produced 280.2 million liters per day of oil products, while the liquid fuels consumption decreased by 5.1 percent to 240.8 million liters per day.

Below is the data on final primary energy consumption in Iran (excluding power generation, energy waste in refineries, transportation, distribution, etc).

* mb OE - million barrels of oil equivalent

Iran imported 4.5 million liters per day of gasoline, and exported 3.7 million liters per day of gas oil and 18.47 million liters per day of fuel oil.

The country also exported 1.07 million barrels per day (mb/d) of crude oil during this period.

The country’s oil export in the fiscal year to March 2011 was above 2.2 mb/d, but plunged due to Western sanctions, imposed in 2012.

The sanctions on Iran were removed in January 2016 and the oil exports resumed to about 2.1 mb/d in August 2016.

During the last fiscal year, Iran’s raw gas output increased to 255 bcm, of which 190 bcm was consumed as energy.
