Azerbaijan’s State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, SAARES (aka ABEMDA in Azerbaijani) is going to renew attempts to carry out two projects in Iran, according to Vahid Mahin, CEO of Azerbaijan Power Engineering Consultants, an Iranian firm that has been in talks with ABEMDA over the projects.

“They have told us that the case is still on the table in Baku and they are going to renew their efforts to drive the nail home,” Mahin told Trend November 7.

He explained that one of the projects is a 50-megawatt geothermal power plant in Meshkinshahr, northwestern Iran, and the other is a 100-megawatt wind farm in Khaf, eastern Iran.

“Problems with planning as well as the acquirement of suitable land have so far delayed the projects,” he noted. “ABEMDA will bring the money, but they have good experience in geothermal power generation and drilling as well.”

“These projects will return the invested sum to the investor in less than 5 years. The profit is estimated at 20 to 30 percent for each project. They are BOO (build-own-operate) contracts and the Iranian government has guaranteed to buy the power for 20 years according to an MoU that has been signed between ABEMDA and Iran’s Renewable Energy Agency,” added Mahin.
