Iran’s unemployment rate hits 12.7%

Iran's unemployment rate during the summer (June 21-Sept. 21) stood at 12.7 percent, according to the latest report from the Iranian Statistical Center.

The unemployment rate among Iranians aged over 10 years in the mentioned three-month period was 1.8 percent more than the same period of 2015.

The figure also indicates a 0.5-percent increase compared to the preceding quarter's unemployment rate (March 20-June 21, 2016).

About 23.03 million of Iranians above 10 years old were employed in the mentioned three-month period, which are 628,000 more compared to the summer of 2015.

The number of unemployed Iranians above 10 years old reached 3.337 million by Sept. 21, 2016.

All Iranians aged over 10 years, who worked at least one hour a week, or temporary left their work during the survey week, were included as employed labor force in the report.

The country's labor force participation rate has increased by 1.5 percent – to 40.4 percent compared to summer 2015.

The figure indicates an increase by 0.9 percent compared to the spring of 2016.

About 19.4 percent of the country's labor force was employed in the agriculture sector, while 31.5 and 49.1 percent were employed in the industry and services sectors, respectively.

Unemployment among men and women was also around 10.4 and 21.8 percent, respectively, during the period.

The country's urban and rural unemployment rate in the mentioned period stood at 14.4 and 7.9 percent, respectively.

According to the report, the country's labor force participation rate for men and women was 64.9 percent and 15.9 percent, respectively by Sept. 21.

The figure for country’s urban and rural areas also reached 42.2 percent and 39.8 percent, respectively in the same period.
