Health official warns of huge costs of hemophilia drugs in Iran

Iran annually spends about $1.3 billion on medicines for those suffering from special diseases, accounting for the 30 percent of the nation’s drug expenditure, a senior health official said.

Rasoul Dinarvand, the head of Food and Drug Administration of Iran, has said that about 10,000 patients suffer from hemophilia in the country, IRNA news agency reported.

Addressing a conference on thrombosis and hemostasis in Tehran, he added that the country annually spends about $91.7 million on the drugs required for those suffering from hemophilia.

Calling on the government to allocate the required budget to help the patients suffering from special disease, he added that such disorders incur heavy costs on the patients.

The official added that the government over the past year has cut the drug subsidies by 15 percent.

Dinarvand had earlier announced that the country produces worth of $3 billion of various types of pharmaceutical drugs per year.
