Iranian Transportation Minister Abbas Akhoundi says his organization for developing the country’s rail system and its infrastructures needs to lure $28 billion worth of investment.
He also described the issue of developing rail system for suburban areas of high significance, adding that about 1.2 million individuals commute between capital Tehran and the surrounding cities on a daily basis, Mehr news agency reported.
He minister added that a large number of this group of commuters get cars and buses to reach Tehran which hugely contributes to air pollution problem.
Abbas Akhoundi further called on foreign firms to invest in Iran’s rail projects.
According to Iranian officials, the railway in the current situation has a 2-percent share in the transportation of commuters between Tehran and its suburbs. The figure is projected to reach 20 percent in future.
