Iranian transportation ministry needs to invest about $28 billion to develop the country’s rail system over the next five years.
Iranian Transportation Minister Abbas Akhoundi said this amount of budget should be spent on railway infrastructure for carrying freight and passengers, ISNA news agency reported Nov. 27.
The minister said the plans for developing the country’s railway system cover infrastructure, new technologies and fleet.
While the country’s road transportation currently consumes about 450 million tons of fuel per year, the figure for transportation through the railways is 40 million tons.
