Iranian fishermen catch more bony fish in Caspian Sea

Fishing season in the northern Iranian provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan ended as some 5,600 tons of bony fish was caught from the Caspian Sea, Mokhtar Akhoundi, an official with Iran Fisheries Organization, said.

Every year, the harvest season for bony fish in the Caspian Sea begins in October and lasts until April the next year.

Akhoundi said that the bony fish caught from the Caspian Sea in this season indicates a rise by 5 percent compared to the previous season, the state-run IRINN TV reported April 26.

Over 68 percent of the caught bony fish was Caspian kutum (3,819 tons), he said adding that the weight of the harvested Caspian kutum was 12 percent more year-on-year.

Akhoundi said that Iranian fishermen also caught 1,576 tons of mullet during the fishing season, 8 percent less compared to the preceding year.

Some 2,648 tons of bony fish was caught in Gilan province waters (a 1 percent yearly fall), while fishermen in Mazandaran province caught about 2,696 tons of bony fish (a 14 percent increase), the official said, adding that over 254 tons of bony fish was caught in Golestan province, 10 percent less year-on-year.

Some 10,000 Iranian fishermen were involved in catching bony fish in the Caspian Sea in the last fishing season.

Iran’s exports of fishery products over the last fiscal year (ended March 20) increased by 15,000 tons to reach 85,000 tons.

France, Qatar, the UAE, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Russia are among the top importers of the Iranian fishery products.
