Handmade Carpet Association head talks carpet weaving in Iran’s Mahabad county

This Iranian year the carpet weaving industry has increased by 30 percent in Mahabad county of Iran’s West Azerbaijan province, head of Iran's Mahabad Handmade Carpet Association Chiya Gurbani Aqdam said.

Gurbani Aqdam said that handmade carpets were mainly sold in Hamadan, Arak and Tehran.

Thus, 2,000 people are involved in carpet weaving industry, 80 peercent of them are women, while the rest - men, he said.

Mahabad county ranks third in Iran's West Azerbaijan province in terms of size of handmade carpets and number of weavers.

The West Azerbaijan province is one of the main centers of handmade carpets. Approximately 290,000 square meters of different carpets are woven a year. Urmia, Hoy, Bukan, Tekab and Mahabad are famous for carpet weaving.
