TEHRAN, Iran, Oct.24

Trend:

Iran is to halt production of a number of domestic auto models, while some people suggest imports of second-hand vehicles shall be a good alternative, said Iranian member of the parliament's mines and industries committee Mohammad Reza Mansouri in an interview with Trend.

"Implementation of this decision during current sanction is not very easy, unless there is a proper alternative to replace the cars, production of which will be suspended," the MP said.

"There are vehicles that should be used in the city and not on the roads, but people use the auto model "Pride" out of the city and this increases the risk of accidents," Mansouri added.

The halt of production of some auto models has been announced by the minister of Industries, Mine and Trade due to lack of their quality and safety.

The Iranian MP's has emphasized that most of domestically produced vehicles fail the crash test. In his words, while foreign autos have from six to 10 airbags, the domestically produced cars have none.

The MP went on to say: "Currently, the best choice is the import of second-hand autos imports that are cheaper in price and are safer. Reduction of the car production in the country will not damage the industry, but there is resistance to this."

"The second-hand autos can be imported through free zones in Anzali, Qeshm and Kish. The vehicles can be imported at the price of $4,000 to be used as taxis or for public services, but unfortunately, some peope seek to prevent this," Mansouri said

Iran's Minister of Industries, Mine and Trade Reza Rahmani has recently announced that production of four auto models will be suspended in 2019 and in 2020, indicating that the decision was made to reform the structure and management of auto industry . Thus, production of Peugeot 405 GLX would be stopped by the end of current Iranian year (began March 21,2019).

Rahmani has also announced that production of three types of Pride model would be halted from December, 2019. The ministry statement says that the decision aims to improve the quality of cars and meet customers' demand.
