Iran has signed an agreement with Russia and Kazakhstan on temporary import of wheat, Iranian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ali Akbar Mehrfard told reporters on the sidelines of the forum for acquaintance with the agricultural sector trade opportunities between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union, Trend reports via IRNA.

Mehrfard said that the potential of Iran’s flour mills increases domestic consumption twice.

Therefore, the temporary import of wheat for flour production may be an advantage for Iran’s economy, the deputy minister noted.

“Last year (until March 21, 2019) Iran was ensuring wheat on its own and didn’t need to import it,” Mehrfard said.

The deputy minister noted that the trade memorandum between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union doesn’t include application of a preferential tariff on wheat imports.

Mehrfard added that three years ago, none of Iran’s dairy plants exported products to Eurasia, especially to Russia.

“There is now such an opportunity for big Iranian dairy plants and companies that produce fish and shrimp,” the deputy minister said.

The forum for acquaintance with the agricultural sector trade opportunities between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union was held at the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture in Tehran. The main purpose of the meeting was the development of joint markets.
