BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 9

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

Since the beginning of the current fishing season (Oct. 12, 2019), 336 tons of bony fish were caught in the waters of Iran's Gilan province located in the country's north, Deputy Director of Gilan Fishing Department Akbar Ildirim said, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

The deputy director noted that the Caspian kutum accounted to 111 tons of the fish, while mullets accounted for 192 tons of the fish, and the remaining three tons included other varieties of fish.

The amount of the caught fish has decreased by 57 percent compared to the same period of last year, Ildirim said, adding that the monetary value of the caught fish reached 153 billion rials (roughly $3.64 million).

Fishing in the Caspian Sea heavily depends on the weather conditions, the deputy director said. In his words, no fishing activities were carried out during 12 of 55 work days within the current fishing season.

The amount of caught fish is expected to increase during the season, when the mullets will be mostly in the areas close to the coast, the official said.

He added that 4,000 fishermen of Iran's 42 fishing companies are involved in fishing in the Caspian Sea coast of Gilan.
