Iran Energy Minister apologizes for electricity blackouts

TEHRAN, Iran, May. 25

Trend:

Iranian Minister of Energy, explaining the main reason for recent electricity blackouts in the country, apologized to the people.

The installed capacity of the power plant is 85,313 MW, out of which 12,000 MW is the capacity of hydropower plants and 73,313 MW the capacity of other thermal, nuclear, renewable, and distributed generation power plants, Iran Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian said among reporters today on Tuesday, Trend reports citing ISNA.

He went on to say that the non-hydro power plant's function depends on temperature and altitude. The power plant located in Bandar Abbas at sea level has different outputs from the power plant located in high pastures.

“The total practical electricity generation in the summer is usually 60,000 MW,” he said. "This year, the decrease in rainfall (which was about 55 percent of the last year`s rainfall level) caused power plants to face a practical capacity reduction of 3,500 MW.”

Ardakanian said that the Energy Ministry`s forecast was to have 56,500 megawatts of electricity generation for summer, but the increase in the number of subscribers by one million has led to rising in consumption.

The Energy Minister said that premature heat is one of the reasons for blackouts.

Referring to unauthorized cryptocurrency mining he says that the government has submitted a resolution on cryptocurrency mining, according to which the miners have to obtain the necessary permits.

“Over 300 MW of electricity consumption is estimated for the legal cryptocurrency miners,” he added.

The Minister of Energy stated that the ministry`s goal was to build a renewable power plants for miners.
