Political tensions prevent Iran from joining trade agreements - Chamber of Commerce

TEHRAN, Iran, June 7

Trend:

The head of the Iran-China Joint Chamber of Commerce Majid Reza Hariri said the political tensions prevent Iran from joining the treaties and trade agreements, because this tension can extend to other countries, Trend reports via ILNA.

“Most of the countries in the world that have a large share of global trade have joined multilateral, bilateral, regional and international treaties,” Hariri said.

He pointed out that most important first step is to have preferential or free bilateral agreements with countries.

Hariri said Iran's policymakers 'have been negligent' in recent decades and the private sector has become accustomed to products that have no foreign competitors and to a lot of government support,” he said.

"This laziness of the private sector also goes back to public sector policies," Hariri said.

He added that as a result, Iran now is neither a member of regional pacts, WTO, nor does it has good bilateral trade pacts.

“On the other hand, entering into a trade agreement requires proper political relationship with those countries,” he noted.
