Iran seeks to increase trade turnover with Uzbekistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 5. Iran intends to increase trade turnover with Uzbekistan by organizing various meetings in the field of transport and transit, conducting cooperation exercises, and exchange of experiences, Deputy Director General of Iran's Customs Administration Ebrahim Naghdi said, Trend reports.

Naghdi made a remark at the meeting with the delegation headed by First Deputy Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Mamanbiy Omarov.

According to Naghdi, the organization of joint customs meetings, the study of useful solutions to simplify transit rules and acceleration of trade will contribute to increasing trade turnover between the two countries.

He also added that customs, as the protector of the economy, plays a fundamental role in preventing the smuggling of drugs and banned products out of the country.

"Iranian customs intends to benefit from Uzbekistan's experience in raising drug detection dogs and take effective steps in this direction," he said.

At the meeting, First Deputy Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Mamanbiy Omarov also stated that the Uzbek Customs is fully prepared for the proposals put forward by the Iranian Customs in the direction of simplifying transit and developing cooperation between Iran and Uzbekistan.

Omarov emphasized that the development of trade relations with Iran is one of the issues on the agenda of Uzbek customs. Simplification of transportation will lead to acceleration of freight and transit traffic.

Meanwhile, according to the statistics of Iran's Customs Administration, in the 10th month of the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2023, through January 20, 2024), Iran's trade turnover with Uzbekistan amounted to about 467,000 tons worth more than $371 million. Iran's trade turnover with Uzbekistan increased by 13 percent in value and 29.8 percent in weight during the 10 months compared to the same period last year.
