Iran slashes imports of essential goods into country

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 26. Iran's imports of basic foodstuffs (wheat, barley, corn, rice, vegetable oils, etc.) decreased by 9.72 percent in value terms and 1.35 percent in weight terms in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024) compared to the previous year (from March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), the data of Iran's Customs Administration said, Trend reports.

Iran imported 24.6 million tons of essential products worth about $16.1 billion last year.

The country imported mainly corn worth $3.81 billion, vegetable oils worth about $2.38 billion, oilseeds (such as soybeans) worth about $2.24 billion, rice worth $1.3 billion, and pressed soybeans worth $1.06 billion last year.

Imports to Iran last year included $1 billion worth of wheat, $747 million worth of barley, $574 million worth of heavy truck tires, $477 million worth of raw sugar, $460 million worth of chemical fertilizers, $694 million worth of red meat, and $300 million worth of school supplies.

During the mentioned period, Iran imported $293 million worth of paper dough, $229 million worth of dried tea, $217 million worth of legume crops, $122 million worth of chemicals, $88 million worth of chicken meat, $50 million worth of various types of seeds, and $20 million worth of newsprint paper.

To note, Iran's importation of products mainly focuses on importing necessary goods that the country needs and imposes certain restrictions on the importation of domestically produced products into the country.
