BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 9. Iran and Türkiye are planning to start exchanging electricity soon, the deputy director of Iran's Tavanir Company Mohammad Allahdad said, Trend reports.
According to him, the exchange of electricity was realized in the form of a test between Iran and Türkiye last year.
Allahdad added that during the visit of Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar to Iran, electricity exchange was the focus of attention, and it was decided that experts from the two countries would organize meetings and examine the technical and financial aspects of the issue.
Allahdad noted that the potential for electricity exchange between Iran and Türkiye has amounted to 50 megawatts in recent years. However, the potential for electricity exchange has increased to 450 megawatts in the past two years.
He stated that because the days of holidays are different from this point of view, the exchange of electricity between Iran and Türkiye can be easily accomplished. Weekends in Türkiye are Saturday and Sunday, while weekends in Iran are Thursday and Friday.
The official emphasized that Iran intends to reduce imports in the field of electricity from neighboring countries to zero. To this end, the focus is on the implementation of electricity exchange. Iran intends to import electricity when the country's electricity consumption reaches its peak and export this electricity when it decreases.
Meanwhile, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar visited Iran on April 4 and held negotiations with Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Oil Minister Javad Owji.
To note, at present, the energy potential of all power plants in Iran (thermal, water, renewable, nuclear, etc.) is more than 92,000 megawatt-hours. 82 percent of them are thermal power plants.
