The thousands of nuclear weapons in the United States are a threat to global security, Iranian ambassador to the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Asghar Soltanieh said in Berlin on the sidelines of the 59th Pugwash Conference on nuclear disarmament, Press TV reported with reference to IRNA.
He criticized the United States and certain Western countries for refusing to dismantle their nuclear arsenals, calling it a clear violation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Soltanieh also denounced the Westerners for their double-standard policy and silence on the Israeli nuclear weapons program, saying that they have closed their eyes to Israel's illegal nuclear activities.
He also called for more international efforts to reach the goal of total nuclear disarmament, noting that this edition of the Pugwash Conference is focused on European contributions to nuclear disarmament.
Pugwash is an international organization that brings together scholars from around the world to help reduce the danger of armed conflict and find solutions to global security threats.
