Iran says US to succeed in preventing talks only if seeking no-agreement outcome

Tehran, Iran, June 23
By Temkin Jafarov, Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

The US will not be able to prevent the ongoing nuclear talks unless it does not intend an agreement to be reached, Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, spokesman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told Trend.

"I think we have been completely rational and reasonable in outlining our views and demands, and the US has been robbed of opportunities to make excuses," the lawmaker said.

He said he was surprised that although the Islamic Republic has been steadfast in stressing its red lines and national interests, the American side occasionally brings up new conditions during the negotiation process.

So far they have introduced issues such as interviewing nuclear scientists, conducting inspections beyond the NPT and even beyond the IAEA Additional Protocol, suspending sanctions instead of removing them, and removing them in a process of two to three years rather than at once, Hosseini said.

The MP said that the two sides are trying to reach a deal despite differences.
"Having in mind the serious differences, it is unlikely that we would reach some agreement in due time. But a deal is not inaccessible," he said.

Iran and the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) are holding their final talks before a June 30 deadline to strike a comprehensive agreement on the country's nuclear program.

The Western side says it has concerns over the peacefulness of Iran's nuclear activities. Iran says the concerns are baseless and economic sanctions posed on its economy are unjust.
